Covey and Corbin ready for interleague duel in the desert

Dylan Covey will make the eighth attempt to clinch his first career win on Tuesday when the White Sox meet the D-Backs and Patrick Corbin at Chase Field.

Covey allowed four runs and five hits in six innings in his last outing against the Mariners. At that time he had no choice. He struck out nine Padres hitters on his previous start to the last.

“His last two outings have been much, much better,” said Rick Renteria, manager of the White Sox. “His straight line has improved, his speed has started to rise, we’re just trying to get him to attack the strike zone as much as he can.”

In three openings in May, Corbin has allowed an output speed of 95.3 miles per hour in over-the-air connections, up from its average (92.9 mph) in April, according to Statcast. Those balls have traveled an average of 304 feet. The southpaw, in addition, has accepted five homers in May.
