The D-backs took Virginia first-year first baseman Pavin Smith as their first overall and seventh overall in the 2017 amateur draft.
Smith, 21, is characterized by his great focus on the plate and was one of the hardest college hitters to strike out this year. In his first 43 games, he hit 10 home runs and barely struck out six times.
Smith hit the victory hit in Game 2 of the 2015 World Series against Vanderbilt. Smith underwent Tommy John surgery after the Virginia title at the World Series College, and returned to play in 2016.
The Rockies took it in the 32nd round of the 2014 amateur draft, but did not sign.
