Godley hopes to extend his success on his first start against Saint Louis

The Diamondbacks’ good start to the season has been built on a series of brilliant performances. One of the most shocking is Zack Godley, as a consistent opener.

Godley will climb to the mound for the D-backs as they face the Cardinals in the second game of the three-game series on Wednesday (9:40 p.m. ET).

Full Game Coverage

Since reaching the D-backs rotation on April 26, Godley has a 3-1 record and a 2.53 ERA in nine starts, with 52 strikeouts and just 17 passports. After finishing last season with a 6.39 ERA in 27 outings, Godley has turned his curve into a pitch that consistently makes batters fail. In addition, he has added to Arizona pitching pitch, pitching at least 5.2 innings in each of his outings this year.

The Cardinals will hand the ball to Adam Wainwright, who threw seven innings on Friday, though he was ruled out with 20 runs in 10.1 innings in his previous three starts.

Things to know about this game:

• Wainwright has made 10 starts against Arizona and is 7-4 and 2.71 ERA. Its effectiveness against the D-backs is the sixth lowest among active pitchers with a minimum of six starts against Arizona.
• Godley has not allowed more than three runs in any of his nine starts this season, and has allowed two or fewer runs in each of his four starts at Chase Field.
• Opponents have lost 46.3 percent of their swings against Godley’s curve and have a .125 batting average against him. Both statistics rank him among the top 10 starters this season.
