Panamanian Randall Delgado will open instead of the injured Taijuan Walker on Wednesday afternoon when the D-backs will close their three-game series against the White Sox.
Walker was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday after presenting a blister on the index finger of his right hand.
Delgado has pitched in 17 games as a reliever this year and his last opening was on August 22, 2016, when he faced the Reds.
“We feel he is the most prepared person for this moment,” said Doreback manager Torey Lovullo. “He’s gone away in a few games and he’s been playing really well. We talked about who could give us the chance to win the game and we feel Randall can do it.”
Even in the best possible scenario, the D-backs know that they will have to use several relievers to complete the game.
“What we are asking is that he give us everything he has, as many innings as possible,” Lovullo said.
Delgado is 4.05 ERA this year, but just 0.63 in his last seven games.
