Weaver goes for revenge against Walker, D-backs

Taijuan Walker and Jered Weaver will meet for the second time this year when D-backs and Padres start a three-game series Friday night at Petco Park.

Walker prevailed last time at Chase Field, allowing only two runs in eight innings and striking out 11. Weaver, meanwhile, allowed five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.

That was part of a poor streak of three starts for Weaver in which he had 12.08 ERA and talked about his future in the rotation. The right calmed the waters a little Sunday by allowing a run in six innings against the White Sox.

• Parent receiver Hector Sanchez will begin a rehabilitation assignment this weekend. He will be catcher and hitter emerging during the coming El Paso series against Oklahoma City. For his part, left fielder Matt Szczur continues day by day with pain in his ankle.
• D-backs shortstop Chris Owings hit a pair of solo homers against Weaver in his opening earlier this year. Yasmany Tomás also had a two-run homer, and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is 6-4 with a double and a career home run homer to Weaver.
• The Padres clinched a race against Walker in the first inning of their opening game, and then the only other hit against him was Ryan Schimpf’s home run in the seventh.
